The crucial things to consider when buying or choosing a diamond are the four c's - Colour, Cut, Clarity & Carat weight. The way these four aspects of a stone relate to one another can drastically vary the look and cost of a diamond.
Colour
The whiter, or more colourless, the stone the purer it is and therefore the more sought after and precious. The grading scale ranges from 'D' (exceptional white) to 'Z' (tinted colour). The exceptions to this of course are fancy, or coloured, diamonds which have their own grading scale.
Put simply, the better the colour you can get, the better the stone will look. We generally don't sell anything graded under an 'H' (white) as the tint of colour is then quite noticeable and can detract from the overall impact of the stone.
Cut
Diamonds are cut from the rough piece in order to maximise their potential to shine and dazzle. The proportions of a stones shape is the aspect that determines how light enters and exits the stone which in turn determines its brilliance. The scale ranges from 'ideal', 'very good', 'good', 'fair' through to 'poor'. We always aim to supply the best we can for each bespoke jewellery commission we undertake and supply at least 'very good' cut diamonds.
Clarity
The clarity of a diamond refers to the presence of minor flaws or inclusions, such as tiny fractures, scratches or trace minerals within the stone. The grading scale used to measure the clarity of a diamond ranges from 'IF' (internally flawless) to 'I3' (imperfect). We tend to use diamonds graded to at least 'VS' (very slightly included), this means that the stone only has minute inclusions difficult for an expert to detect under x10 magnification.
Carat weight
The weight of a diamond is referred to in terms of its carat weight. Generally speaking, the higher the carat weight the larger the stone. This is also dependent on cut. For example, a poorly cut, very deep stone is going to weigh more than an ideal cut stone that looks the same size from above. This is why it is important to make sure you take into account all of the four c's, not just the carat weight. We advise that bigger is not always better and prefer to provide customers with diamonds that have the best cut, clarity and colour they can afford and then determine the carat weight from there.

The traditional styles of cut (as shown below) are all magnificent when combined with good proportions, colour and clarity.
